MOLD IN RV – HOW TO PREVENT & ELIMINATE MOLD IN RV

Pro Breeze Electric Mini Dehumidifier, 1200 Cubic Feet (150 sq ft)

Finding mold in your RV can draw out a lot of different emotions and thoughts. Get focused because it can cause a whole lot of issues if you do not act fast.

IDENTIFY CAUSE OF MOLD

Mold is most frequently caused by humidity. Humidity can become an issue in your RV whether your RV has been or is in storage, or if you use it full time. Even with the colder, drier air found in the winter months, if your RV stays closed up for an extended period of time, moisture can still build up inside.

Humidity levels can rise due to several causes, such as cooking, taking a shower, making coffee, the weather, and even just breathing. Anytime water, especially hot water, is used in your RV, the potential for high humidity is there. Just like in a home, this can lead to wood rot and metal corrosion in your furniture, walls, floors, and the structure itself. It also causes the growth of mold & mildew, which can become a serious health hazard. Warm, damp air in your RV can also attract certain bugs and insects (super gross!)

PREVENTING MOLD

One way to tackle this issue out is buying a dehumidifier that removes a certain amount of moisture from the air and deposits it in a container that you have to empty periodically.

The picture above is how we learned the hard way. Between all 7 of us (Me, David, 2 kids, 3 dogs) all breathing in a small confined space and the kids spilling liquids in their bunks, we found mold between the wall and mattresses. We threw out all the mattress pads and treated the area. We now are more aware to open a window or the roof vent to air out the RV when we are cooking or taking a shower (common sense right? NOT!) The humidifier runs 24/7!

Be sure to wipe the windows and wall with something like this shamwow, lower the temperature inside, get the dehumidifier going and stop breathing. Just kidding on the last part.

  • Ventilate the RV while working.
